sewing
We love to sew! Its brilliant, it takes brain power and patience.
Let’s face it – sewing is where it’s at.
At Magpie Makes we offer a range of sewing and textiles sessions, with clubs, workshops and courses for all ages. See below for more information.
QUICK LINKS: HAND SEWING | MACHINE SEWING
hand sewing
Hand sewing is the perfect counterbalance to today’s instant, digital society – it takes perseverance and focus – and absolutely no screens are involved. In one of our sewing clubs you pick up and put down a project over a number of weeks until you have something that has been hand-crafted with love and will be treasured forever.
We run after school sewing clubs at:
-
Alexandra Primary School
-
Fern Hill Primary School
-
Grand Avenue Primary School
-
Magpie Studio
-
Rowan Preparatory School
-
St Matthew's Primary School
-
St Lawrence Junior School
-
St Luke's Primary
-
Surbiton High School
-
St Lawrence School
-
Thames Ditton Junior School
We also run a weekly sewing club on a Wednesday, 3.30pm-4.30pm in our studio which is available for children between years 3-6 and can accommodate 8 children.
"I just wanted to email to let you know how much Ellora has been enjoying sewing club. I've spent forever trying to find her something that helps her relax and deal with the pressure of school and it seems sewing is the thing! She looks forward to Mondays so much because it's Magpie Makes day and raves about it every week. Thank you for all your efforts, care and attention!”

machine sewing
For older children who enjoy hand sewing, a natural progression is to learn how to construct a garment or a simple bag or cushion on a sewing machine. At Magpie Makes we have a colourful set of John Lewis sewing machines which are very well used!
If your child would be interested in machine sewing, keep a look out for a Textiles Camps where we gently introduce machine
sewing as part of the day.
"My 11-year-old grandaughter has just come home with the most beautiful summer dress! She chose the fabric herself and then spent four happy afternoons cutting and constructing it under Chantal's patient instruction. She loves dressmaking and I'm so glad she's learning such a wonderful skill.”
